A Brief History of the Lady Oak Leaves.

We are part of The Ancient Order of Druids, which is a men's only organization, but as a ladies section, we are called the Lady Oak Leaves.

Our Order dates back to the beginning of the century, but we, in Thanet, re-started the Lady Oak Leaves after many years of closure, on 3rd November 2006 with 10 Ladies. Since then we have increased in numbers and are doing well.

The reason for the name Lady Oak Leaves is the different positions of the Officers in the Lodge which are named after the various types of oak trees such as the species Robur, Ilex and Cerries.

We raise money for charity but the charities must be Thanet based ones i.e. Guides, Scouts etc. and our money is raised through holding Social Evenings. We also go out into the community and help.

Over the years we have donated to the following charities:

Dane Valley Youth Football Club,
The Local Hospice (twice),
Bosom Pals,
Chloe's Transport Car,
The Local Parkinson's Group,
A Local Autistic Group,
The Secret Jungle, which is for both disabled and able bodied children to explore and have fun together, in a safe environment
and the Thanet Riding School for the Disabled

We still help out with events at the Secret Jungle. At the beginning of the year, we decide on a new charity we want to help for that year.

We work well as a team and bring together different ideas and interests, which we discuss at our meetings.

In addition to our Social Evenings, we also have lunches at local venues, day trips out and trips to see shows, bowling etc. We attend the Remembrance Parade in Margate each November and place a poppy wreath on the War Memorial. We donate pet food at Christmas for local animal shelters and are looking at the Shoebox Christmas Appeal for children abroad. On occasions, we have a stall at local fayres. Some of our Ladies have entered the local Race for Life and the Starlight Stroll in aid of cancer charities.

We work hard and play hard.

We meet on the first Friday of each month from 8pm to 10pm.
